Man, this song, this video... I watched it before work the other day and it haunted me all day, still is - She's gonna find you, she's gonna kill you... tried to decide if it was totally creepy or totally righteous, but why, when it's clearly both. I love it, I appreciate it.
This song and it's video are not going to let up until I say one more thing...
In the song there's a line "...she shot a string of flame from the center of her chest.." that seemed at first to say I will kill you with the wound that you created in me. But after a few days thinking, I'm hearing: I have a right to show you my pain, the pain you have given me. You have nothing to do but fully honor this experience.
This is not a negotiation, neither you nor I no longer have the right to hide. We are both remade. This affront is our challenge and our opportunity; the seed of the future.
Thanks for your insightful comments, Connie...This song and video haunt me as well. The world is so full of violence; physical, emotional, psychic, and so on. It's hard to know how to understand it. Opening up to it is terrible and necessary. Acknowledging our own inherent violence is important. Man overpowers women, beats her down, takes her power...but can he really?
It's like the fear poem by Joy Harjo: "You have choked me, but I gave you the leash. You have devoured me but I laid myself across the fire..." No one takes anything you haven't already given them.
